Incorporated in 1778. This town was first settled by the Leavitts of Hampton, led by Captain John Leavitt, a soldier who had fought the French and Indians at Lake George. The territory was known as Leavitts-town from the time of the initial charter in 1749 until 1778. The name Effingham was probably selected by Governor Wentworth in honor of the Howard family who was Earls of Effingham and related to the governor by marriage, although the name was not used until the town's incorporation.
